Why are French culture and sophistication so closely related in the minds of many people?

Very often, I hear people suggest that French cuisine, French fashion, and French art are the best of their kind. French restaurants are often the most expensive, and many people see having a separate residence in France as a sign of high status (relative to having a separate residence in any other country).

What explains this? Why are “French” and “sophisticated” or “cultured” so closely entertwined, even now that France is no longer the world power it once was?

i think it is because people are stuck in the past and do not realize how much France has changed. I, for one, cannot stand the French.

Being of French ancestry I must tell you that what is special about the French is their ‘et je ne sais quoi ‘, all the little things about the lifestyle and attitude.

Very simple. We are a very gullible and very ignorant culture who can be lead around by the nose to follow any bullsheeiiiittttttt that hollywood or adveritsers or “ettiquitte” teachers say so that we can look the “most cool”, most sophisticated, most up-to-date that we think is possible, when in reality we just look the most foolish of anyone. God help our ignorant, feeble asses.
